Patios, Parks & Beaches
My dogs Bennie and Brody are homebodies through and through. Bennie is my scrappy little rescue schnauzer, and Brody is my yellow lab who is happiest lying quietly behind me while I make coffee. Neither one of them has much interest in a road trip. If you have not read it yet, Bennie’s rescue story is one of my favorite things I have ever written.
My granddog Ash, on the other hand, has logged some serious patio miles. He is the one who actually gets out and about, so between his outings and my own curiosity, I have done a lot of research on where a dog is genuinely welcome in this part of Florida, not just tolerated.
South Florida talks a big game about being pet friendly. Some of it is true. Some of it means “leashed dogs on the patio, but not the beach, and definitely not that beach.” So here is the real rundown, city by city, so you can plan a day out without getting turned away at the door.
Boca Raton
Boca does dog ownership at a pretty high standard, and it shows. I have written before about why Boca Raton is such a pet-friendly place to live, and my own dog-loving neighborhood, Royal Oak Hills, is a great example of that in action.
Beaches Bark Beach at Spanish River Park is the big one. It is Boca’s official off-leash dog beach, tucked between lifeguard towers 18 and 20 at 3001 N State Road A1A.
It is open seven days a week now, with morning and late afternoon windows so dogs get their off-leash time without the midday heat.
You do need a permit though. Residents pay $35 a year per dog, non-residents pay $210, and there is also a three-day pass for $15 per dog if you are just visiting. Beach parking is separate from the dog permit, so budget for both.
Permit pricing is set by the city and can change, so confirm current fees on the official page above before you go.
Parks Mizner Bark Dog Park, 751 Banyan Trail, is the go-to for off-leash play without a beach permit. It is fully fenced with three separate sections for large, medium, and small dogs, plus water fountains, wash stations, and shade.
A Dog Park Vehicle Permit is required to enter, and permit pricing is set by the city. For more green space around town, my Boca Raton parks guide covers the rest of the city’s best spots.
Restaurants known for being dog friendly
- Max’s Grille at Mizner Park, with a large shaded patio, water bowls, and a clearly stated dogs-on-the-patio policy
- Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar, which has an actual dog menu with grilled hamburger or chicken over brown rice and veggies
- Rocco’s Tacos, a spacious patio with water bowls, great for a bigger group
- Casimir Bistro in Royal Palm Place, a shaded dog-friendly patio for French bistro fare
- Patio Tapas and Beer, mostly outdoor seating, small plates and sangria

Delray Beach
Delray might be the most dog-obsessed downtown in the county. Atlantic Avenue is basically one long dog-friendly patio crawl, and it pairs nicely with my full list of 25 fabulous things to do in Delray Beach if you are planning a whole day there.
Parks Lake Ida Dog Park, 1455 Lake Ida Road, is Delray’s official off-leash park, run by Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation. It has separate fenced sections for small and large dogs, a dog wash station, water fountains, and restrooms nearby.
Restaurants known for being dog friendly
- El Camino, modern Mexican with a shaded, dog-welcoming patio
- Deck 84 on the Intracoastal, which has its own dog menu with options like a beef patty or chicken over brown rice and Greek yogurt
- Saltwater Brewery, rotating food trucks and dogs welcome at outdoor tables. It is one of the names on my best breweries in South Florida list too
- Dada, a Delray institution in the historic Tarrimore House, with dog-friendly patio seating under a hundred-year-old banyan tree
- Table 165 in Pineapple Grove, cozy and private patio seating that works well for a quieter dinner
- Boston’s on the Beach, right on A1A, with an actual “Pooch Menu” for dogs
A quick note on the beach itself: Delray’s main beach along A1A is not an off-leash spot, and it is very much a local beach rather than a tourist one. If you want sand time with your dog, Lake Ida Dog Park is the better bet in this city.
Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach
This stretch of Broward is where the dog parks really shine. If you want the bigger picture on the area, I rounded up 20 things to love about living in Pompano Beach and 18 cool things to do in Deerfield Beach a while back.
Parks Woofing Waters Dog Park & Marina in Deerfield Beach is the standout. It has separate fenced sections for big and small dogs, water spraying jets in both, a dog wash station, and picnic tables nearby.
It is seasonal and requires registration, so check hours and current pricing before you load up the car.
Canine Corner Dog Park in Pompano Beach is a members-only 2.6-acre spot with separate large and small dog areas, water stations, and shaded benches.
Membership pricing is set by the city and can change, so check the official page for current rates.
Restaurants known for being dog friendly Cove Brewery in Deerfield Beach welcomes leashed dogs indoors and out, with a rotating beer list to go with it.
A note on the beaches here: the main public beaches in Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach are not designated off-leash areas, so this stretch is really a parks-and-patios day rather than a sand day with your dog off leash.

Palm Beach and the East Side Corridor
The island of Palm Beach itself leans upscale, and the dog-friendly dining reflects that. I have a longer Palm Beach things-to-do guide if you want to build out a full day there.
Restaurants known for being dog friendly Worth Avenue is the move here. The famous shopping strip has multiple pet-friendly al fresco cafes and even water fountains along the sidewalk for thirsty dogs mid-stroll.
Bice Ristorante has breezy patios that welcome dogs, and Pizza Al Fresco, just a few blocks off Worth Avenue, is a favorite for a casual pizza lunch with palm trees overhead.
Just across the bridge in West Palm Beach, the pet-friendly options multiply: Rocco’s Tacos on Clematis Street, Prime Catch on the waterfront in Boynton Beach (a great stop if you are also chasing stone crab season), and Darbster, a vegan bistro named after the owner’s own rescue dog, with a waterside deck and 20 percent off entrees for pup parents on Sundays. For more of the city, check out my 25 things to do in West Palm Beach.
Parks City Paws Dog Park at Howard Park, 1302 Parker Avenue in West Palm Beach, has separate fenced sections for large and small dogs, cooling stations, and shaded benches, all inside a larger park with walking trails.
Peanut Island, just off the coast near the Palm Beach Inlet, is a dog-friendly favorite for boating, swimming, and a day in the sun, and the Peanut Island Shuttle Boat itself welcomes dogs if you do not have your own vessel.
Beaches For actual sand and surf time, the pet-friendly section of Lake Worth Beach is worth the drive if you want more than a patio. My guide to 17 of the best Florida beaches has more on beach-day essentials.
Quick Tips Before You Go
Florida heat and Florida rules both call for a little planning. Keep these in mind:
- Call ahead to confirm current pet policies, especially on weekends
- Check the pavement with the back of your hand. Too hot for five seconds means too hot for paws
- Never leave a dog in a parked car, even for a quick errand
- Bring your own water and offer it often, even where a bowl is provided
- Keep leashes on except at designated off-leash spots like Bark Beach or a fenced dog park
- Bring waste bags everywhere, and rinse off after saltwater beach time
- Dogs stay off chairs, tables, and laps at restaurant patios, even the dog-friendly ones
For hurricane season pet prep, my hurricane season tips and resources post is worth a bookmark. And if you have ever wondered why one patio welcomes dogs and the one next door does not, it comes down to Florida Statute 509.233, which lets each city decide.
The Bottom Line
Whether you are local or visiting, this stretch of coastline between Boca Raton and Palm Beach gives a dog a genuinely good life. Patios with water bowls, beaches with permits, and parks built just for them. Ash gives it four paws up, and Bennie and Brody approve from their couch back home.

Please Read This Before You Go
Pet policies change. A lot.
Restaurants change ownership. Patios lose their dog permit. Parks close for maintenance. Beaches update their rules every season.
So before you load up the car with your dog, please do these three things.
Call the restaurant, bar, or park first. Ask if dogs are currently allowed, and where.
Check the official website for that location. Look for their most current pet policy.
Do not assume. A place being dog friendly last year, or even last month, does not mean it still is today.
This is especially true for permits and membership pricing. Every dollar amount, permit fee, and membership cost in this guide can change at any time. Cities update these numbers often. Always confirm current pricing directly with the city, county, or business before you go.
This guide is a starting point for your research, not a guarantee. Please always verify before you show up with your pet.
