Boca Raton’s Only Five-Star Labor and Delivery Unit
Having a baby is a life-changing event. And, while you are likely beyond excited to meet the newest member of your family, you may also be apprehensive about the birthing process. I know I was.
Recognizing that many women feel this way, the awesome administrative and medical team at West Boca Medical Center’s Boca Center for Women’s Care has developed the best family centered maternity unit in Boca Raton. In addition to providing top-notch medical services, they also cater to the emotional aspect of having a baby.
West Boca Medical Center recently had a groundbreaking ceremony for their new Boca Center for Women’s Care. The renovation is under way and all of the maternity rooms will be updated by end of the year.
Boca Center for Women’s Care: The Best of the Best
The Boca Center for Women’s Care, formerly known as The Birthcare Pavilion, at West Boca Medical Center, in their own words, “strives to provide the very best in family-friendly care.” They realize that while giving birth necessitates top-notch medical professionals and facilities for the health of the mother and child, it also requires a delicate emotional approach directed toward the entire family.”
As the only five-star labor and delivery unit in Boca Raton, they are also a National Certified Safe Sleep Hospital. They are committed to reducing infant sleep deaths through their “hospital infant safe sleep policy”. Additionally, they place a high priority on accommodating your wishes and your birth plan.
The hospital can support natural births, anesthesiology, C-sections, and even hydrotherapy. Birthing amenities include, among other things, aromatherapy and lemon ice chips. They have truly thought of everything.
Incredible Care from Beginning to End
The hospital offers a host of resources to its patients, both before and after they give birth. The information they provide covers everything from what to bring to the hospital to creating a nursery to newborn care. They also leverage technology wherever they can.
You can pre register online, from the comfort of your home. And, make sure to check out their “e-nursery” service which allows you to share pictures of your beautiful addition with select family and friends.
Nursing: All the Support You Need
One of the most challenging aspects of being a new mother is nursing. What seems like a simple process can sometimes be overwhelming. Of course, the professionals at West Boca are experts in helping new moms adjust.
In addition to identifying where to rent a breast pump, they also can help you connect with local support groups and lactation consultants. The broad array of breastfeeding information they provide is invaluable to new mothers.
The NICU
One thing I want to mention is that the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at West Boca Medical Center is fantastic. West Boca Medical Center has an on-site level III NICU which is staffed with the specialists, and is the only level III NICU in Boca Raton.
As a forward thinking medical center here in Boca Raton, West Boca Medical Center is the first hospital serving Palm Beach and North Broward counties to use NICVIEW 2™, a live video streaming camera system, in the NICU, to ensure that families and their newborn are connected.
Our Story
When I was expecting my first child, Kylie, in 1990, The Birthcare Pavilion, now the Boca Center for Women’s Care at West Boca Medical Center was newly opened. I remember taking a tour and being so impressed with the birthing suites and the pavilion itself. At the time, we lived in West Boca, so having a new maternity facility that was close to our home was wonderful.
As things happen, I ended up needing a c-section, and the care that I received from the nurses, doctors and staff was excellent. When the unexpected happens you want a team that is gentle, informative and well trained at your side.
The following evening, as we enjoyed our new baby girl, they brought us new parents a lobster and steak dinner…which was quite a fancy perk at the time! I remember my mom saying that times sure had changed since she had me!
Today, the Boca Center for Women’s Care, offers aromatherapy, lemon ice chips, a post-partum snack pack and a celebration breakfast! They also offer private post-partum rooms with single bathrooms for comfort and privacy!
Our NICU Experience
We had Kylie on April 10, 1990, 8lbs, 5oz. We took her home a couple of days later, however, she spiked a temperature about 7 days later and we ended up bringing her back to the hospital and the medical team advised to put her in the NICU. Again, the medical staff was simply wonderful, to the point, informative and addressed all of our concerns. It was a scary few days, but the infection that she had picked up finally dwindled away and we took our little baby girl home.
As an FYI…”Level III NICUs are defined by having continuously available personnel (neonatologists, neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists) and equipment to provide life support for as long as needed.”
Learn More Today
The offerings provided by the hospital are considerable, there are so many things available. In order to streamline your learning curve, the hospital employs a well-respected maternity navigator who will guide you through your entire experience.
If you are pregnant and are in the process of deciding where to give birth, consider West Boca Medical Center and its Boca Center for Women’s Care. Take some time and enjoy a one-on-one virtual tour. You can see all that they have to offer, ask questions and become familiar with the facility.
West Boca Medical Center has made a commitment to providing new mothers and their families attentive comprehensive care while offering them a host of hands-on resources. Having a baby is a spectacular experience. Giving birth at the Boca Center for Women’s Care at West Boca Medical Center makes it that much better.

Welcome to Wellington, Florida one of the most beautiful cities in Palm Beach County! Those who live here enjoy magnificent weather, beautiful homes and fun activities and events all year long! These fabulous qualities are only enhanced by all of the amazing things the city offers.
Wellington is is the western part of the county and not too far from West Palm Beach, Lake Worth and Palm Beach Gardens. Approximately 15 miles from the beach, convenient to Palm Beach International Airport and just a short drive to Florida’s Turnpike you can easily get to cities and communities in Broward and Miami-Dade counties to the south.
Since it is impossible to list everything we love about Wellington here we thought we would start with some of the top faves that others shared with us!
Here are more things to know if you are considering moving to Wellington!
Animals
Are you an animal lover? If so, make a reservation to tour the Wellington Conservation Center. This 501c3 organization is sanctioned by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Federation and provides a home to many abandoned and injured animals. In August of this year, a baby sloth was born at the center!
Art
The arts are alive and well in Wellington. Annually, the Wellington Arts Society hosts ArtFest on the Green. If you (or your kids) love to paint, visit The Art Cellar. Classes and events are scheduled for both adults and children; it’s a great place to relax and be creative.
Dining
Wellington is home to a broad array of restaurants. You can enjoy dinner out with your children or a romantic and relaxing evening with someone special, both without leaving town. Can we recommend Mellow Mushroom for dinner with kids (the pizza and pretzels are the BEST)? And, for a relaxing dinner (or even happy hour), consider Kaluz. This restaurant’s atmosphere is as appealing as its food is delicious!
Horseback Riding
Wellington is home to a number of stables and many residents are horse lovers. Horseback riding is incredibly popular (the city has 57 miles of trails). Whether you have years of experience or a true beginner you can enjoy riding here. Dream Believers Stables in Wellington offer both individual and group lessons. They are also one of many places where you can board your horse in town.
Wellington has many fabulous which to choose from. If you are looking for one that has almost everything, visit Village Park on Pierson Road. It offers both indoor and outdoor facilities and includes everything from gymnasiums and classrooms to sports fields, concession stands, hockey rinks and more. Note to nature lovers, Peaceful Waters Sanctuary, which comprises more than 30 acres of undeveloped wetlands surrounded by a boardwalk, is located within this park as well.
Polo Grounds
Another reason people are moving to Wellington includes the International Polo Club, which is the premier polo destination in the world and Polo season is highly anticipated every year! This facility hosts a number of polo tournaments, which are open to the public, each year. From champagne brunch, field tailgating, sponsor boxes and grandstand viewing you will love experiencing a Sunday polo match! PS…the half time divot stomp ala Pretty Woman is not to be missed!
Shopping
The Mall at Wellington Green is a favorite shopping destination that also includes a cinema, live events and of course restaurants for you foodies out there! You can easily spend an entire day here! There are also a number of big box stores within city limits as well as some of our favorite grocery stores including Publix and Trader Joe’s (try the cookie butter, yum!!)
Water Sports
The Wellington Aquatic Complex is the home of the Wellington Swim Team. Other activities here include diving, rowing and sculling, water aerobics, swimming lessons and birthday parties (their pool with waterslides and sprinklers is awesome)! Daily and annual passes are available.
Wellington Amphitheater
The city government hosts a plethora of events at the amphitheater. Bring the family out for a concert, a movie or an evening with food trucks (the latest unique dining craze). Take advantage of all this city sponsors.
Coral Sky (Palm Beach County)

West Palm Beach
By the way did you know that Wellington is not far from Downtown West Palm Beach and Palm Beach. Want to take a day trip? Buzz by Clematis Street, take in a show at Kravitz Center, catch Brightline to go to Fort Lauderdale or Miami or take in iconic Worth Ave via short car ride from Wellington.
Wellington is one of the most popular communities in Palm Beach county and if you want more details click on this link! There are just so many great things to do in Wellington!

No matter when you are making move or why, relocating to a new city or town is tough, stressful and tiring. My goal is to always be a connector, a facilitator for you and of course help you find an amazing new home.
As a kid that moved frequently growing up, including moving to Boca in 1978 as a high school junior at Boca Raton Community High School I totally understand what is involved with making a significant change.
I have included a short video all about Boca Raton and why I love it here! You will find many videos I have done on the surrounding South Florida communities so take a quick look!
Relocation Tips
My relocation buyers have shared with me some of the things that helped them stay “sane” during their relocation move.
Stay organized to keep your stress down. Nothing worse than panicking as it makes everything seem sooo much more overwhelming.
Know your relo package. Does your company pay for flights, house hunting trips, seller assistance, buyer closing cost help. Don’t assume anything and if you don’t see it, ask for it, the worst that can happen is your relo specialist will just say no.
Second showings! If you are looking at properties online, which everyone does, look carefully at angles of photos, ask what is behind those trees in the backyard (like a water tower or busy road), try to come to see the area at least once or twice and absolutely look on YouTube and local blogs like www.soooboca.com to get a feel for the area.
Look into the cost of living the new city you are moving to and in some cases perhaps it makes sense to rent for 6 months before you buy.
Of course…once you are here lets get you wired into the local chamber like the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, non-profits, sports and other activities for your kids and other networking organizations to help you meet new friends and business acquaintances.
Do you have a stay at home spouse or partner? Hey it is important for everyone making the move to meet new people…we can help with that too! From mom groups to empty nester activities we can wire you in to what is happening around town! Join our Facebook group!
If your company is planning on relocating employees to our area let us be your only call…we not only help with the move but we network your employees into the area with ease.

Selling a probate property, in Florida, that you have inherited is overwhelming to say the least. From coping with the grief and loss of a loved one to dealing with the many issues surrounding selling a property like handling an estate sale, clean out, repairs, moving or living out of state, it becomes overwhelming.
Are you a personal representative or executor of an estate that’s going through probate or potentially going to be going through one? I have tips and information for you to help you through the property sale process. Please contact me for a confidential meeting.
What Is Probate: Florida Bar Association Definition
Probate is a court-supervised process for identifying and gathering the assets of a deceased person (decedent), paying the decedent’s debts and distributing the decedent’s assets to his or her beneficiaries. In general, the decedent’s assets are used first to pay the cost of the probate proceeding, then are used to pay the decedent’s funeral expenses, then the decedent’s outstanding debts, and the remainder is distributed to the decedent’s beneficiaries. The Florida Probate Code is found in Chapters 731 through 735 of the Florida Statutes, and the rules governing Florida probate proceedings are found in the Florida Probate Rules, Part I and Part II (Rules 5.010-5.530).
There are two types of probate administration under Florida law: formal administration and summary administration. This pamphlet will primarily discuss formal administration.
There is also a non-court-supervised administration proceeding called “Disposition of Personal Property Without Administration.” This type of administration applies only in limited circumstances. (via Florida Bar Association)
Selling A Probate Property
In this blog post I have included a video where I discuss some of the situations that I encounter as a listing agent when getting a property ready for sale including working with the personal representative, heirs and their attorney.
5 Probate Property Home Selling Tips
Don’t just hire anybody to help you out. From Realtors to attorneys to contractors and vendors, make sure you interview and get referrals for the professionals that you are going to have assist you with the sale of the probate property.
Don’t turn off the power to the home. Make sure, especially here in Florida, that you keep that A/C running. Between the heat and the moisture here it makes good sense to keep the house cool and as humidity free as possible.
If possible, maintain the landscaping in the front and backyards. Curb appeal is important and you don’t want the appearance that nobody lives in the property to avoid possible break-ins.
You can hire local professionals to help you clean out your probate property. If you live out of are, in particular, you may not be able to come here to ready the property for sale. There are a variety of movers, packers, estate sale companies and cleaners that can get the property ready for you, without you being here.
In today’s world, if you do need to conduct an estate sale, you can Facetime, Zoom or do a What’s App video meeting and go through the property virtually to get things coordinated in regard to what you are going to sell, keep, donate or dispose of.
I have worked with probate properties for many years here in South Florida and if you need to just talk or want an attorney or another local professional referral please reach out to me. I have a VIP list of vendors and I can give you an idea of property value too.
Lastly, in many cases, a property may not be a probate situation, however a surviving partner or spouse may need to downsize their living situation and I can assist you with that as a Senior Real Estate Specialist. From assisted living, memory care or independent living, I can guide you to caring professionals that can assist you with making a housing decision for your loved one.
If you have would like to set up a private and confidential conversation with me about selling a house in probate in Florida, lets set up a confidential time to talk.
I defer all legal questions about probate, accounting, finances and real estate law to attorneys and licensed professionals. I am not an attorney, financial planner, accountant or give any legal advice on any real estate transactions. Please reach out to your own attorney for legal advice.

Need Some Design Inspo? Check Out Your Local Store!
I fell in love with HomeGoods many years ago! I was studying interior design in college for a bit before I switched my major to advertising but I never lost that passion for home decor and design.
I truly love the way a few well placed items can change the entire feel of a room and a home for the better and give one a sense of peace and joy.
The cool thing about being a Realtor is that I truly get to see some incredible homes, home design and also some very expensive home designs.
For those of us not with an unlimited budget, HomeGoods is a great option if you are wanting to remodel your home or freshen up any room.
If you are like me I literally have to decide between buying a new pair of shoes or home decor!
I am always looking for smart deals that I can use personally and that I can move around my house in order to create different looks for different seasons.
Home Staging
As a Realtor I also will purchase items to stage my listings with. I store items to re-purpose and reuse for different situations and decor. I like my properties to have a fresh look and will blend my items with my seller’s individual style.
HomeGoods Has A Blog
Home Decor Tip: Check out the HomeGoods blog for great posts on room decor, holiday ideas, kitchen decor and more…I recently discovered this and it is a great tool for us DIY folks!
Typically my HomeGoods experience occurs during the week when I am trying to figure out either an update to my own home or a new listing I have taken.
I love the challenge of finding the perfect item at a deeply discounted price!
My best finds are usually discards from other shoppers that I find in departments I am perusing throughout the store. A mirror in lamps, a pillow in the art department and a chair that someone forgot to pick up at the front of the store…lucky me!
Declutter Challenge
One of the suggestions I have, before you shop, is to declutter the rooms in your home that you want to freshen up. It will allow you to see what you really have and what you will donate or get rid of. Get your 7 day challenge here!
Pinterest
Take some time to peruse the fabulous world of Pinterest. Let me tell you…setting up boards with the ideas you have, the items you love and pinning other great suggestions is a complete afternoon of design and decor bliss!
Pillows
By the way…they have the best decorative pillow selections especially for every season. This is a great way to change up the look in your bedroom, living room or dining room.
New Items

There is something magical about Harbour Island and the gorgeous islands of the Bahamas. I have been fortunate to travel to a few of the Bahamian islands over the years with my husband, who is a sport fishing captain. Our family had the opportunity to experience Harbour Island and Eleuthera when the girls were younger as Andy was fishing there quiet regularly with clients. My daughters fondly remember their time at Valentines and many of the Bahamian friends my husband had.
We have celebrated a few birthdays and long holiday weekends in the beautiful Bahamian islands. Enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, fishing, food and fun.
As luck would have it, living in Boca Raton means a fairly short boat ride in some cases or quick flight to many of the islands in the Bahamas. We are perfectly situated here in South Florida to fly out of Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Miami International and Palm Beach Internationals and on the occasion, out of Boca Raton Airport via a chartered flight, to Nassau, Bimini, Eleuthera, The Abacos and beyond!
Back in the 1990’s we were staying at Valentines Residences Resort and Marina in Harbour Island, Bahamas as my husband had a day of fishing planned with his then boss and thus I was left to my own shopping and exploring devices.
As luck would have it I wandered into India Hicks store The Sugar Mill on Bay Street I knew I was home! I fell in love with her “island style” and it became one of my favorites moving forward.
India Hicks Island Style
So imagine my pleasure of being able to interview India Hicks, designer, lifestyle entrepreneur, best-selling author and mother of five at the Delray Beach Public Library Book It! luncheon in 2019.
India graciously jumped on with me to do an Instagram “Live” and was funny, easy to chat with and shared some fun tidbits about her life and style! It was truly a very cool and fun moment in my life!
India’s father was famed interior decorator David Hicks, and her mother is Lady Pamela Hicks, whose father was the last Viceroy of India, hence her name. India Hicks was a bridesmaid in Princess Diana’s wedding, which I recall getting up quite early to watch in 1981.
It was truly a marvelous afternoon complete with champagne, beautiful items to purchase from her then collections and a fun and informative talk about her life and what inspires her.
With that being said, I thought to myself, since I enjoyed doing the interview so much why not share some of the fun things and locations I had experienced visiting Harbour Island and the Bahamas with my family.
Fishing, Diving and Water Activities in Harbour Island
If you love to fish, Harbour Island and Eleuthera will not disappoint! From bone fishing, to fly fishing to deep sea fishing you can bring your own boat to the island and stay at one of the marinas or you can hire a charter captain and guide. No matter what you do, you will be on the hunt for all types of fish from dolphin (mahi) to tuna to marlin and a variety of sport fish.
Things To Do In Harbour Island
From fishing, boating, shopping, eating, chilling and of course dancing (the nightlife is sooo much fun), Harbour Island is one of my favorite places to visit. I hope to return very soon…thinking 2021! Without further ado, here is a small list that will help you jump start your next Bahamas trip!
Rent A Golf Cart at Kiplins and Explore (one of our most favorite things to do).
Sooo if you all follow any of our Instagram stories and social media y’all know how much we love trying different types of dishes and recipes! Some of the finest cuisine in the Bahamas is right here in Harbour Island and you will not be disappointed. Have I mentioned Bimini bread yet? Order that ahead, and multiple loafs, as you will be able to inhale one by yourself!
Lets talk too, about conch! OMG…fresh conch salad from Queen Conch is something I dream about. It is simply fresh and delicious. I can tell you I have enjoyed nothing more that just sitting there eating that beautiful salad!
Visit the Queen Conch – Conch salad, conch fritters, blackened conch and more! I dream of this place and the delicious conch salad they prepare! Casual and low key, you will love this place!
Runaway Hill – Accommodations include rooms and villas. Executive Chef Krishana Higgs creates an amazing food experience for all who dine there!
Rock House is a beautiful boutique hotel with an amazing restaurant! Known for fine food, destination weddings and a beautiful location, this is a not to miss locale.
Known for their lobster quesedilla, Sip Sip is fun, fun! I remember having a delicious Bloody Mary that was spicy and refreshing while enjoying a fresh salad overlooking that blue water!
Arthurs Bakery -Think lobster scrambled eggs, banana pancakes and french toast just to name a few items from the menu for a quaint breakfast.
Harbour Island Hotels You Will Love
You can book your hotel right here and through the individual websites. There are many hotels and resorts in Eluethera and Harbour Island you can choose from, this is a small sample of places to stay. The choices are endless and charming and there are accommodations for every type of occasion and vacation.
Pink Sands Resort – PS…shopping and horse back riding on the beach at this resort is sooo much fun!
We always love to head out after dinner for a little dancings, some island drinks and music to finish up a day of fishing, snorkeling, swimming and exploring. Here are a few suggestions to plan for during your time in Harbour Island.
So there you go. A few ideas for you for when you are traveling to Harbour Island or other islands in the Bahamas. It is truly a beautiful country with friendly and amazing people. We have always enjoyed our travels to the Bahamas and since it is a short flight or boat ride from Boca Raton and South Florida, it makes it easy for us to return again and again.

Need Great Ideas For A Quick Florida Lunch At Home?
If you are ever struggling to figure out authentic Florida lunch ideas for entertaining friends or family we have a winning menu for you! This is a 30 minute meal with about 20 minutes of prep time.
We decided to have a “dining” at home experience while Kylie was here on business. A mother daughter date of sorts!
Disclosure: The links in this post/on this page are affiliate links via Amazon and other companies and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a commission.
But what to choose? We needed some Florida lunch ideas that were fresh and new that we had not made before. In our travels we love to share and try new dishes so after chatting via text and thanks to Google we came up with the big picture and we each came up with a dish!
Are You A Foodie Too?
We are foodies first and foremost and love to try new places, spaces and dishes. However, we also really enjoy eating at home in our kitchen around the island with friends and family.
PS…if you are a foodie like us check out “Homegating Is The New Tailgating” blog post that has some great appy and lunch ideas ideas for football season!
Since we live in South Florida and we “love” seafood and especially shellfish we thought you might enjoy this easy to make (anytime of the year) meal for a lite lunch or dinner.
For Starters
To kick off our delicious lunch Halle Alessia made a marvelous charcuterie board that was perfectly put together with cheese, meats and olives. It looked sooo pretty we didn’t want to touch it … but we did and enjoyed it immensely.
What’s On The Menu
We paired the crab cakes with an amazing hearts of palm salad and refreshing #SoooBoca spritz of sorts with Ketel One Botanical Vodka and fresh citrus coupled with a splash of champagne.
We chose a recipe that emulates the lumb crab cakes from the iconic Joe’s Stonecrab in Miami. Now we adore stone crab especially when it is in season, from October 15th – May 15th, but for now…we thought an amazing crab cake lunch would be perfect for this girls luncheon.
Now just to be fair…we also adore garlic crabs and The Rustic Inn in Fort Lauderdale is the best game in town for that so check them out as well!
Recipes
Crab Cakes Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant Recipe
1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat, picked over 1/2 red bell pepper, chopped 1/4 cup chopped onion 4 scallions, trimmed and chopped 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1 garlic clove, minced 1 egg, lightly beaten 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 tablespoon Tabasco sauce 3/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus more if needed lime or lemon wedges, for garnish
In a large mixing bowl, combine the crabmeat, red pepper, onion, scallions, parsley, and garlic. In a small bowl, stir together the egg, mustard, lemon juice, Worcestershire, and Tabasco. Gently fold this mixture into the crab meat mixture; then add 1/4 cup of the bread crumbs, mixing with a light touch just until combined.
Form 8 patties, using 1/2 cup of the crab meat mixture for each. The patties should be made in ovals about 1/2 inch thick and 3 1/2 inches long. Coat the patties with the remaining bread crumbs and place them on a wax paper-lined baking sheet. Refrigerate until set, at least 1 hour.
Heat the oil in a large skillet, preferably nonstick, over medium heat. Add 4 of the crab cakes at a time. Cook until golden, about 5 minutes. Adjust the heat as you cook so that the fat maintains a steady, gentle sizzle. Gently flip the crab cakes with a spatula and cook until golden, about 5 minutes. Serve hot, garnished with lime or lemon wedges, with a small cup of salsa on the side, if you like. Makes 8 crab cakes. – This “copy cat” recipe is from http://seafoodchainrestaurantrecipes.blogspot.com/2016/05/joes-stone-crab-crab-cakes.html
Hearts of Palm Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing
Prep all of the items in the recipe and chill for an hour in the fridge
1 14 ounce can of hearts of palm, sliced
2 papayas, peeled and cubed (we used mango)
2 kiwis, peeled and cubed
2 bananas, sliced
1 fresh pineapple, cubed or canned is fine (we did not use due to a food allergy)
1 6 oz box of dates, chopped
Lettuce (we added a fresh lettuce to this recipe)
Combine the fruits and lettuce into a pretty glass bowl, mix and serve.
The salad recipe is from Tropic Cooking by Joyce LaFray Young. This is the most fabulous cook book that has amazing cuisine from Florida and the Islands of the Caribbean! Grab this amazing addition to your kitchen!

And just like that…out of left field here comes the invite only Clubhouse App! What is it you ask and why should I run, not walk to get involved with the Clubhouse community? Keep reading!
Connect, Collab, Learn on Clubhouse
#SoooBoca loves tech and loves fresh social media options and boy is this one cool option! This is one of those few times I have actually been on the ground floor of an app and platform like this. It didn’t happen for me with Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram or TikTok but it is happening for me with Clubhouse.
Clubhouse social network is the perfect app for course creators, speakers, trainers, coaches, businesses, collaborators and connectors! If you have ever wanted your voice to be heard, and don’t want to do video or a podcast, you can now make your own seat at the table with this app!
I love that CEO’s, celebrities and industry icons from around the globe including Forbes Riley, Elon Musk, Amy Porterfield, Jasmine Star, have flocked to the platform and are sharing and fielding questions and advice from members.
Where To Find People
Once someone is officially on the app, they can make a profile and grab their URL to share anywhere. Here is mine @themichelebee.
Currently I have started two Clubhouse Clubs. The South Florida Network is for all locals, business owners and entrepreneurs in our area to join in and converse.
The second club I have is for Realtors called Club Real. I love to network with agents globally and refer back and forth so this is a club to do just that.
Anyone can start a club now on Clubhouse which makes it very nice and you will get a ton of invites to those clubs so choose wisely!
So What Is This Clubhouse App?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As per Mashable- In short: Clubhouse is an audio-based social media app. The company describes itself as “a new type of social product based on voice [that] allows people everywhere to talk, tell stories, develop ideas, deepen friendships, and meet interesting new people around the world.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Clubhouse is currently in beta mode, currently invite only and currently for iPhone users (I know, I know). Make sure to download the app and sign up. Why you may ask? Because users get “invites” to give away and if you are in someone’s contact list, who is already on Clubhouse, who has invites, will probably share one of the golden Willy Wonka invites with you! ⠀⠀⠀⠀
Getting Started
Add your profile photo with a great color for your background (not logo), add your profile bio (first 3 lines of 125 characters) are seen as a preview so make it good with a great hook to encourage other people to “follow” you! Take a look at mine @themichelebee and you can get a good feel for what to do!
Connect your Instagram and Twitter. There is no direct messaging feature on Clubhouse, but, and here is the great part of this…you will grow your Instagram following for sure so that is a huge bonus!
Start looking at the “hallway” which is the main feed on Clubhouse. This will show you current rooms that are happening…and trust me they are happening. You can “join” a room as a listener and also put up your hand to be a speaker. If you see a room you like, jump on in.
You will notice there are people at the top of each room with the “green bean”. These are room moderators and they guide the conversations in each room. They also have control over inviting people up on “stage” (that is where they are) to join the conversation or ask a question. Sometimes you may be also added as a moderator!
Clubhouse Tip: Mute your “mic” if you do go on the stage as Clubhouse does not automatically mute you when you go up and well, lets just say, we have all heard some bathroom sounds and you don’t want to be that person!
One thing to keep in mind is that the Clubhouse algorithm (yup they have one just like all the other socials) is looking at who you follow, what Clubs you join and your activity to curate your experience. The first couple of weeks I had rooms being suggested to me that did not peak my interest, I now know that I can hide those rooms and also in my profile where the “gear” is upper right, I can tap on that to adjust my settings including tapping on adjust my “interests”.
Speaking of settings, you can also adjust notifications, which I highly suggest you do, or you will lose your mind. I also have “trending room” turned off.
BONUS TIP: Clubhouse does not
How To Create A Club On Clubhouse
As of this post, Clubhouse loosened up their rules and guidelines for creating actual Clubs in the app. Now anyone can create a club. For example, as I mentioned, I have created two clubs. The South Florida Network, to connect locals and business owners together in conjunction with Facebook group of the same name and Club REAL #realtorlife (for Realtors).
The cool part about clubs is that you can “host” rooms under that club name and continue to grow your followers and connect with people you want to get to know or do business with. You can also let other people host a room in your club or co-moderate/host together. Very cool and great for getting known.
Bonus: The more rooms you add value you to the better.
14 Pros & Cons Of Clubhouse
Here are the Pro’s:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Mastermind Rooms (that if you were paying for would be $1000’s of dollars)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. High Level Coaches, CEO’s and Influencers Are There And Sharing Knowledge⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Networking (You can add your Instagram and Twitter) and direct people there. PS… your follower count will start growing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. You can start a private room with people or a public room and share your knowledge as a moderator⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. Connect and engage with people in your industry and in your related niches ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6. Learn from experts, colleagues, grow your own authority as an expert and plant the seeds for referrals and future business.
7. Find guests for your podcast or become a guest on someone else’s podcast.
8. Mastermind rooms that you can join in or start.
Here Are The Cons:
A little clique at times just like any club.
2. There are people on the app that will try to sell you courses and products. Buyer Beware!
3. It can be a time suck if you don’t control the notifications and your time on the app.
4. Make sure that you take what you need and leave the rest!
5. Everyone professes to be an expert…trust me, they are not. Bad advice is in every room so please do your due diligence.
6. Racism, bullying and rudeness have been ongoing concerns of the Clubhouse community and are against terms and service.
Clubs You Might Want To Following
There are 1000’s of clubs now on Clubhouse. Don’t just hang out in your industry, check out other industries and conversations! I love checking out the blogging clubs!
The Real Deal Club – Sue B. Zimmerman – The Instagram Expert – @suebzimmerman
The Midlife Network – Colleen Rosenblum – Hot Flashes Cool Topics – @colleenrosenblm
WomXn in Business – Christina Holder – @xtinaholder
Good Morning, Real Estate! – German Hernandez – @yourswflrealtor
Luxury Travel House
Breakfast With Champions
The Hustler Club
New Bloggers Club
Last Thoughts
As someone that loves to try all the different platforms that show up on my radar, I really try to keep it simple. One, it must be a connector, it must have the ability to generate leads and referrals, it must hold my interest and it must be profitable. I have already generated 2 referrals on Clubhouse in the last 30 days so this definitely checks the boxes I like for spending time on any social media app.

I write this post with the greatest respect for home sellers trying to sell their home…but for the LOVE OF PETE please follow some simple cardinal rules of home selling and make sure you grab my 7 Tips To A Fast Home Sale cheat sheet!
Refreshing your home can be easy and you can use what you have and move it around, thrift store shop and even do some quick online home decor shopping!
Buyer Experience
Here are some examples that home buyers of mine have experienced while viewing homes.
House #1 – One of the home sellers (who by the way was an owner/broker) not only made us take our shoes off before touring the house, but had clearly been cooking something smelly before the showing. It was very distracting to the buyers and frankly was a turn off. We left very quickly.
House #2 – The property had never been cleaned…ever! It is important that real estate agents have this conversation with sellers. Hiring a professional cleaning services can make a huge difference as well as an organizer to help declutter. With that being said, you as a seller can DIY and here is a declutter list for you to use to help you get your property ready in just a week!
House #3 – FSBO (For Sale By Owner) It really makes sense, even if you are trying to sell by yourself to hire a photographer to take photos of your home. Make the beds, clear the clutter and clean up the yard.
House #4 – Ah but it gets better and my personal favorite is the last house we went to visit…should have been clued in when we heard the home sellers yelling and screaming from inside the house. Owner let us in…oh joy…we were in the middle of “Divorce Wars” the series.
Now let me tell you this much…besides the fact they were screaming their heads off at each other, they were also sharing a ton of information about their personal situation like their bankruptcy for one and a few other juicy tidbits we could have used during a negotiation had my buyer’s liked the property.
You guessed it! We scurried out of there as quickly as possible to avoid any ricocheting glassware and frankly the energy of the home was terrible.
House #5 – My personal favorite is the lingering/stalking home seller who refuses to step outside and let buyer’s have some privacy! Why oh why do you seller’s do this…it is creepy!
Grab my 7 Tips to A Fast Sale cheat sheet now to help you get the highest and best price for your home.
Just Stop
Look at it this way: It is like going to Macy’s and having the sales person hit you up the moment you walk into their department and describe each new item they have just gotten in! I love that…said no one ever!
Sooo please…if you are trying to sell your home and you want top dollar and you want to get it sold fast here you go…thank me later!
Turn lights on and have blinds and hurricane shutters open
And for the “LOVE OF PETE” head to Kmart, Homegoods or TJ Maxx and buy decent comforter sets and shams for your beds!!!
Lucky Charms For Home Sellers
Lets face it, even the most confident home seller may look to a few lucky charms to help them sell their home.
For example many sellers will get a St. Josephs statue and plant it in their yard!

Moving is never easy! It is overwhelming, stressful, emotional, time sucking and just frankly a big drag in things we have to do in life. It is absolutely mind-boggling if you have are cleaning out a home due to the passing of a friend or loved one or perhaps you have a senior who is need of downsizing to assisted living.
One of the things that I see as a Realtor, when my clients need to downsize is how overwhelming it truly feels for the seller and their family. I have some great tips for you and resources to assist you in coordinating making a move.
Well here is the good news…there are professionals out there that can help you coordinate all the “moving” pieces to your clean out, downsize and actual move.
In this short video I have 5 tips to help you get started with de-cluttering and downsizing your home. Nothing needs to be done in a day so take a deep breath and start with one closet, one room or one bathroom.
One thing I suggest, especially in this unprecedented real estate market, is to check out your latest home value.
Do You Live Outside Of South Florida?
If you are living out of state and don’t want to or cannot make the numerous trips here on your vacation time, your personal time and holiday time to downsize you can hire professionals and direct them to what you want to keep, ship, sell and donate. I can assure you there are individuals and companies that can help you
As a Realtor with designations/certifications working with seniors downsizing and probate properties I am involved with many senior organizations and the Boca Walk to End Alzheimers…believe me we brainstorm ideas for our clients to make things easier for them.
Having The Conversation
My first question to my real estate clients is how are you doing? Many of my clients are caregivers to their parents and are tired, worried and anxious. Many of my clients are making a significant life transition and simply need to bounce ideas off of me in regard to renting vs buying their next home.
The next questions are how do you plan to get the property emptied, how do want items shipped to you, what are you wanting to keep or move. There are always many questions and all of them have an answer and a solution believe it or not.
Downsizing and Moving Tips
Come up with a game plan that works for you and some goals in regard to selling, like time frame, where you want to go, how much you want to spend and what will make you happy.
Communicate with family and friends about your move. At some point you will probably want to share your plans with people you know. You will know the right time to do this.
There are great professionals along with your real estate agent that can help you. I have a great referral team that can assist my sellers and their family. I have placement companies for independent and assisted living, move managers who can help you pack up, car shipping companies, moving companies, estate, probate and elder law attorneys, CPA’s and financial planners and contractors that I can put you in touch.
Dealing with a household of possessions. So just a little secret…nobody really wants your furniture and household items. Taste and styles change so don’t get your feelings hurt. Non-profits won’t take everything either like years ago. They resell items so what they take will need to be in decent condition. Keep what you want to keep, give away to friends and family, donate what you can and trash anything else.
Stage your home to sell it. Many agents can assist with this simply by moving a few pieces of furniture around and decluttering your counters, getting rid of things like silk plants, broken items and clutter. The good news is…you can always pick up things at a local thrift store or HomeGoods to do give your home an inexpensive fresh look.
Lastly, I do work with probate real estate situations involving a home sale. This is typically a devastating time for families and friends and if you are appointed to be the personal representative the added stress of having to prep and sell a piece of real estate is even more difficult. I can assure you that even if you live out of the area, as an agent that works with these situations frequently, many of the same tips do apply. The difference is you are not here to do the labor. I have clean out companies, cleaners and even a virtual staging company that can make the home presentable.
I also work with with a number of elder law attorneys, estate and probate attorneys and real estate attorneys if you need a referral.
Don’t Do This By Yourself
My point is this…don’t go it alone, let people “more organized and connected” than you help you out. You are not on an island believe it or not. Reach out to professionals like myself that can come up with a game plan with you and for you whether for yourself or the senior in your life.
PS…if you are thinking of selling your home check out my 7 Tips To Selling Your Home Faster article for some timely information to get the highest and best price for your home!

Who doesn’t get nostalgic these days when you think about the library? I know we do and we enjoy the unique quietness of our local libraries in a very busy, noisy and techy world. So when you hear the term library, we’re guessing two things come to mind: quiet and books.
While that may have been true years ago, and we all got shushed, we’re excited to share what comes to mind when WE think of libraries in Boca Raton: diverse events and exciting opportunities. Nope, we are definitely not kidding! First, here is a little information.
In Boca Raton, we are fortunate to have two library branches: the Downtown Library (located at 400 NW 2nd Avenue) and the Spanish River Library (located at 1401 NW Spanish River Boulevard). With one branch east and one west, you’ll never have to travel far for a visit.
This post was written in 2018. Please keep in mind due to Covid-19 many services, classes, offerings, and lectures are now virtual or may be on hold. Please check with the library for latest updates.
There are some new times, for now, for you to review:
Express Library Hours
Monday – Saturday: 9:00am-3:00pm
Sunday: Closed
Express Service includes new library cards and renewals, checkouts, and browsing for up to 30 minutes, 50-person capacity. Facial coverings are required.
Curbside Holds Pick-up Hours
Monday – Saturday: 9:00am-5:00pm
Sunday: Closed
Our local library branches are so much more than book depositories. They are buildings filled with activity and opportunity. Check out the nine things you can do at the city of Boca Raton libraries:
1. You Can Borrow. Books, CDs, Video Games and DVDs are all available to library card holders for periods of 7-28 days (depending upon the item). Your library card is good for both locations; you are not limited to the library closest to you. Interested in a specific title? You can even search on-line, from your home, to confirm its availability.
2. Use the Computers: Public computers are available at the library, and with your library card you are entitled to two hours of free internet access. This is the perfect, quiet place to bring yourself or your child to do some research where sometimes getting out of the house is the best option for success. And, if the library isn’t busy, you can even request additional internet time. Here is some more good news; if you do not have a library card, you can request 15 minutes of express time for free internet! Finally, if you bring your own device, there is free wireless internet access available.
3. Print Your Documents: Your printer is out of ink or malfunctioning. You’re out and about and need to print a copy of document. We’ve all had these things happen. The library is the answer to this problem. It offers mobile printing! You can print from home or your mobile device, or you can use one of their computers. They also can photocopy. Black & white copies are 20 cents per page and color copies are 50 cents. What a convenience! Ironically as of this post we saw someone post today on Facebook that they used this exact service!
4. Get Tutored: Yes, you heard us right, tutoring is available. The city of Boca Raton Libraries offer live, on-line tutoring from 3:00pm -10:00pm daily. There are also online resources for most subjects (English, math, Spanish, social studies and science) as well as standardized tests and writing. Finally, the library provides Princeton Review Self Study Modules for college entrance exams ( SAT and ACT).
5. Entertain your Kids: Looking for a fun activity for your children? Both locations of the library offer a host of kids’ classes. From story times to book clubs, there is something fun for your children.
6. Engage you Tween: This may be the most difficult age for parents to entertain. The library realizes this, and created their own set of classes for this age group that always seems too old for kids’ activities and not quite ready for teen things. With choices including Anime, Book Clubs and Coding, they are sure to find something of interest.
7. Enroll Your Teen: While teens often seem to have a lot going on, it is going to be hard for them to resist some the available classes at the library. From coding a robot to novel writing to Harry Potter, the offers are diverse and compelling.
8. Enlist Yourself: Adult classes are plentiful at the city of Boca Raton libraries. Ranging from ancestry tracing to Windows instruction (and so much in between), there is sure to be something of interest. While looking at the options, we found several that appealed to us personally. Click here for a complete list of the adult classes, you truly won’t believe the variety.
9. Get Married: We thought that would catch your eye! Yes, you can get married here; the libraries offer a variety of event space. You can also host a party or a meeting; the opportunities are numerous and the spaces fabulous. Interested in learning more about this unusual option? Visit their website for a description of the spaces available and make an appointment to see them in person!
Now, how’s that for a list! Libraries clearly are not what they used to be. We encourage you to stop by one of the local library branches in Boca Raton, apply for a card, and take advantage of everything they have to offer. Boca Raton offers a wealth of riches to its residents, and these fabulous libraries are just one of the many examples.
PS…
There are many libraries throughout Palm Beach County through the Palm Beach County Library System including in West Boca on 441 and on West Glades Road so if you live out west make sure you check out all the activities and events that are happening in these libraries too!

Every year there are new and exciting fitness trends for all of us to try! Out with the old and in with the new…fitness routine that is!
So you know what that means? It’s New Year’s Resolution time!
For many of us in Boca Raton and South Florida, this includes a renewed commitment to health and fitness. For our friends, families and visitors that means we have a lot to offer in this community fitness wise.
We have some of the best gyms in Boca Raton and South Florida and some of our friends shared their favorites a little further down in this post.
If you are considering making a move here, I think you will be happy with the variety of choices available to you.
Covid, Covid, Covid
Except in 2021 we had a major shift in working out and fitness in our lives due to Covid-19. Instead of going to the gym or working out in a “class” we had to pivot and shift how we were going to get our workouts in. In most cases that meant outside or via virtual workouts.
Unscientific Facebook Poll
So as I typically do, I turned to Facebook to ask the following question:
“2021…you need a new workout…Peloton is not in your budget. What is hot, trending and fresh workout wise for 2021?“
The Answer Is…
Holy cow! Wasn’t expecting the response that I got but it was crazy good and all easy to access and in some cases FREE!! They are in no particular order but all very popular!

In 2019 one of the #SoooBoca Squad, the fabulous Kylie B’s running journey was documented on her blog Travel, Eat, Run so make sure you check that out if you are thinking of starting to run as part of your fitness mix.
Some of the most common fitness goals (including fitness goals for beginners) involve increasing strength and flexibility, building lean muscle mass and losing weight.
While years ago the “weight issue” was geared toward looking “skinny”, the new fitness trend is toward becoming healthy and strong.
2020 Fitness Trends & Workouts
Fitness trends for 2020 included the five below and are still prevalent in our area. At #SoooBoca, we’ve even adopted a few!
Body Weight Training: Using your own body weight for resistance (think pushups)!
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): A workout made up of short bursts of intense exercise.
Group Training: A number of people exercising together often lead by an experienced instructor.
Free Weight Training: Incorporating weights like dumbells and kettlebells, correctly, to increase strength. These exercises can be done almost anywhere.
Consider these fitness trends when planning your exercise routines for the new year. Maybe even try a few. After all, variety is the spice of life (and, you won’t get bored)!
South Florida Gyms
Exercise opportunities in South Florida are plentiful. Because of our beautiful weather, residents are able to participate in a variety of outdoor and indoor activities designed to improve their health and increase their fitness levels. All types of fitness trends can be applied which a great news for all of us!
Many of our #SoooBoca followers are committed to exercise and good health goals this year, so I thought to myself, lets go to Facebook and do an unscientific poll and find out where people are working out. Here are some of the places mentioned with quotes on why they like their gym:
Orange Theory Fitness Boca Raton East: “Orangetheory is my fave for almost 3 years. Not one class is ever the same!…Cardio and strength all in one hour every single time! PS there are many Orange Theory locations throughout South Florida!
Busy Body Fitness Center, Boca: “So much equipment. Everyone is so nice…… Nice trainers. It’s a serious gym.” And, according to another friend: “Busy Body because Samson is the exercise physiologist there and he is so above and beyond . He has laser equipment as well and it’s a convenient location and there’s plenty of equipment; you don’t ever have to wait.”
9Round in Boca: – “I’ve been going to 9Round boxing since March! I love that you can drop in whenever you want—no more excuses that you’re running late and are going to miss a class. And it’s only 30 minutes.”
Lifetime Fitness, Boca: “I’ve tried other gyms but they just don’t compare to lifetime to me”.
Lastly many people do have private trainers and training that is either at a local gym or at home. Sooo many options to choose from in Boca Raton!
Michele’s Musings
In 2020 I added the Classpass App to my phone and was loving it! Once Covid hit the app was paused. I am ready to get back into a yoga class as that was one thing on my goal list for the year. There are many Classpass studios that you can access in our community and country!
This is how it works! You can purchase credits each month and use your membership in 2500 cities to visit fitness locations that include gyms, yoga and pilate studios, dance and more! They do offer a FREE trial so check that out here and many of our local gyms and studios are on the app.
As the say on their site “You can take class anywhere (seriously, they have every top studio and gym) in everything from boxing to barre.” Great if you travel frequently or like a variety of classes and locations to choose from or simply want to try several different things to see what resonates with you.
The new year is an awesome time to join a gym. There may be new member specials and it’s an ideal way to help accomplish your fitness goals. Gym memberships provide you access to a broad range of equipment, classes and knowledgeable instructors so support our local gyms and let us know if you uncover a hidden gem!
My October mammogram has been done. Thanksgiving has come and gone. December has arrived. It is officially the “season of giving”. Like many of you, I have spent countless hours making lists and scouring the internet for that “perfect gift” and supporting local businesses and nonprofits. To be honest, I see the Amazon delivery person sometimes more than I see my friends and neighbors these days.
While we are discussing giving and celebrating, let’s all remember that we cannot take care of others unless we take care of ourselves. Step one in self-care is maintaining good health. For many women, this includes annual mammograms. This diagnostic test helps identify breast cancer; early detection is key to effective treatment and survival. (PS…keep scrolling for the dynamic podcast interview I did with Kym Foust, who is currently in remission.)
Getting My Mammogram
In October, I shared my experience with The Breast Center at West Boca Medical Center. To be honest, I’m STILL talking about it. I was so impressed with the facility, the technology and professionalism of everyone there. They offer basic screening and 3D imaging to their patients; the most sensitive and advanced technology available.
Breast Cancer Awareness All Year Long
In November I was thrilled to interview Kym Foust, a mom and teacher in Parkland. She kindly shares what her journey has been going through breast cancer and her treatment. We have some helpful tips today that we think might help you, especially during the holiday season.
Since #SoooBoca is doing a collaboration with West Boca Medical Center and The Breast Center, and Kym had her treatments and surgeries through West Boca Medical Center, check out this interview that she did for them, we thought it would be great to do an interview with Kym on #SoooBoca Stories Podcast Episode #44. You definitely want to catch this conversation especially in regard to “cancer ghosting.
Gift Yourself
So this year, put your name at the top of your holiday list and give yourself the gift of a mammogram. Honestly, taking care of yourself is the greatest gift you can give to those you love. So, contact The Breast Center at West Boca Medical Center today and schedule an appointment before year-end!
Kym’s Interview – #SoooBoca Stories Episode #44
Kym Foust
In August of 2019, I found a lump during a self exam and I wasn’t super good at doing them diligently, but I had just had, I just got checked out the previous January, got an all clear, but something just wasn’t right. And I had previously had cysts, but this one felt much different and it just had kind of a gut feeling that things weren’t right. So West Boca Medical Center hooked me up with a mammogram and an ultrasound, and right then and there, before I even left, they came in and said, it looks suspicious. We need you to come in for a biopsy tomorrow morning.
So there was no waiting. There was no delay. I went in for a biopsy and two days later, I got the call that it was indeed cancer. At that point, that’s all they tell you. It’s cancer and you have an appointment Monday morning and we’ll talk to you more in depth.
I met with my surgeon, Dr. Dudeck from West Boca on the following Monday and she proceeded to introduce me to the whole team. There’s a lot of anxiety with what’s going to happen. You know, the mortality questions come up, but the minute you sit down with your team and they tell you, this is how we’re going to attack this. Everything starts to fall into place and you feel better.
And it sounds weird to hear that when you find out you’re going to have chemo and radiation and surgery, and then another year of chemo and then meds for 10 years, that it’s calming. But it honestly is.
Once you have a game plan and the ball starts rolling, you feel a lot more calm because you feel like you’re doing something proactive. So that’s everything we did. And right now I’m in the final stages of the year of proactive chemo. And I’ll have that until April.
Michele Bellisari
I’m so happy to hear that you had this amazing team that took care of you and that it sounds like you’re on the mend and on the right path. I think it’s important for anyone listening to this, to know that you can have a team of people that will inform and educate you and help with that anxiety because let’s face it, it’s stressful and scary.
Kym Foust
It’s terrifying. I had an oncologist, a radiologist and a surgeon, but I also had a nutritionist and a psychologist and their oncology specialized. So they took care of me from head to toe, mentally, physically. I never felt like I was alone. I always have somebody on call, no matter what stage of the game it is. If it’s a weekend, if it’s at night, if a side effect popped up, they prepped me really well at West Boca.”
Michele Bellisari
That’s fantastic. And you bring up something really important. They prepped you.
Kym Foust
Yes. Nothing was a shock. They sit you down in a nice little room with couches and they tell you, okay, chemo is about to start. Here’s what could happen. Here’s what’s likely to happen. Here’s the slight chance that these side effects could happen. And here’s what you’re going to have on your bathroom counter to handle all of it. And you’re going to call me if it gets to this stage and it doesn’t matter if it’s 3:00 AM, you’re going to call the office. If a fever of this high happens and nothing was a surprise. I felt so well prepared for all of it. And that was huge.
Michele Bellisari
That is huge because, I would think that would be for anyone, a huge concern of the not knowing and then the what ifs. And I know just in general with any potential medical issue, when you have a better handle on all of those, you go into whatever it might be surgery, treatment, whatever, with a clearer head.
Kym Foust
Absolutely. I have some side effects right now from radiation that I had in the summer and. I’m developing some fibrosis and some lymphedema, but I knew that I had a 50 50 shot of it happening a couple months after radiation. So when it did pop up, I knew what the signs were and I called them and we’re already treating it early and it wasn’t a shock.
Michele Bellisari
That’s great! So one of the things that you and I were talking about before we jumped on here to do this interview was what’s happening over the holidays and how we can share some tips from you in regard to a few different things in regard to how can family and friends can be helpful and caring.
What should they say and not say, what kind of gifts would you get someone who’s in treatment going through treatment post-treatment. Things that are going to be helpful to that person. And we are also going to talk about the fact that ghosting happens frequently. We chatted a little bit about that. So I’m going to start off with, one of the things that you mentioned which is how to help someone emotionally and practically during the holidays, right?
Kym Foust
A lot of us, myself included were type A control freaks, and the fact that we can’t do everything by ourselves anymore is super frustrating. So you can volunteer to help and make it specific. Don’t leave it open-ended, like call me if you need me, because they won’t call you to volunteer to help. If you know, they need presents wrapped or, you know, need shopping, done, ask what traditions they like to prioritize and help make that happen.
Specifically…I want to go do the drive through lights, but I know I can’t drive at night anymore because chemo is kind of sapping my eyesight. So that’s something I’ll be outsourcing to a family member. I can’t move as fast as I used to putting up decorations and it’s taking me three times as long because I have some joint mobility issues from chemo and it’s super frustrating.
Let them know that you’re here to help, even if they’re too stubborn to ask. Also, cut them some slack because we have last-minute appointments that get thrown at us. Or sometimes we just have a bad day that we weren’t expecting. Let’s let them know that that’s okay. Let them know that there are continued limitations even after treatment. Cause sometimes it goes even longer and that it’s okay.
Michele Bellisari
I think that’s going to help a lot of people out because sometimes it’s just a matter of, you don’t know as the patient, as the person going through all this, really how to say this to someone and you just laid it out beautifully for someone to just copy and paste.
First of all…I freaking hate putting up decorations anyways. So the other thing is, you did mention like some continued limitations that linger after a harder treatment is done and do you think that what happens is, I don’t know if this is the right way to say this, that people want you to get better so badly that once you’ve finished that final treatment, that they think you’re not going to need as much help?
Kym Foust
Definitely a hundred percent yes! Because you start to look normal and the hair comes in and you don’t look so gaunt anymore. And you personally are usually sharing with those people
you have a countdown in your head for when you expect to start feeling normal and that doesn’t happen and you may be through surgery and you may be dying or I’m labeled NEB, which has no evidence of disease, which means you’re all clear. You’re still going to feel pretty gross. Even once this chemo that I’m in now, which is called the quote, easy chemo, I’m expected to still have some joint pain and some memory stuff for months or even a year afterwards. And that’s just, you don’t realize that it’s happening and there’s lots of side effects that linger or worsen. And one time I asked a nurse why no one talks about that. And she said, it’s likely that the doctors sometimes downplay it to ensure that we aren’t too scared off from finishing treatment.
Michele Bellisari
Okay. Well I get that but at the end of the day, I think it’s important for everyone to know whatever it is.
Kym Foust
A hundred percent. Yeah. I’d rather, they be brutally honest with me and just listen, there’s going to suck for a year and you’re going to be okay.
Michele Bellisari
Yes. And like you, you know, kind of disseminate like, okay, I can deal with this today. I’ll deal with this thought process tomorrow kind of thing.
Kym Foust
And it’s actually, there’s, there’s silver linings because there were days before I had cancer where I’d lay on the couch from the time I got home from school until it’s time to go to bed. And now I take advantage of my good days and I’m not going to stop moving on those good days because I’m so happy to have them. The motivation is really like, it gives you a little boost of motivation because you don’t know when the next good day is going to come. So you get it all done on your good days.
Michele Bellisari
So you take advantage of that, which allows you to do a little bit of planning, but not over-planning.
Kym Foust
Which I always do. I’m sitting here telling you, you shouldn’t,
Michele Bellisari
I’m a Type A person too. So I totally get that.
Kym Foust
My to-do list is never ending. It’s just perpetual. And I took the date off the top.
Michele Bellisari
There you go. So one of the other things that we were talking about, what is helpful to say and not to say? So what are some tips that you can give about what to say and not to say to someone
Kym Foust
The not to say, and we talk about this frequently in my support group is the keep fighting to keep fighting, to keep fighting it’s instinctual. And I certainly said it to my friends that were diagnosed before I had it.
It’s it’s not inherently wrong to say, but the thing is, we’re not really fighting so much as we have to surrender, we have to give up control of everything. Sometimes we have to give up all physical control. We’re constantly just like laying out on tables for people.
We have no control over anything. So it’s not necessarily a case of you just have to fight because it’s not really a fighting kind of thing. It’s more like you have to surrender until this is over and admit the fact that you don’t really own your body right now until it’s fixed.
Michele Bellisari
Right.
Kym Foust
Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Yeah. It’s not wrong to do the warrior talk and the fighter talk, but sometimes it does get to be a little much. So if you’re close to them, you don’t have to toss those lines out. Just say I know this stinks and you can talk to me and I’m here and if you just want to vent or if you don’t want to talk about cancer today and you want to talk about politics or reality TV, let’s do that. Cause sometimes we’re sick of talking about it.
Michele Bellisari
Yeah. I totally get that actually. And I have friends who’ve gone through breast cancer and you know, and other types of cancer and you know that I’m kind of a straight shooter when it comes to this stuff as well. And I will say, if you don’t and you can insert whatever bad word you want here, if you don’t want to talk about cancer today, that’s fine. What do you want to talk about?
Kym Foust
Yeah, yeah, yeah. See how I am. And then let’s gossip.
Michele Bellisasri
Yeah, exactly. All about the real Housewives. Cause it’s a hot mess. That’s a dumpster fire. Every time you watch a show,
Kym Foust
Salt Lake city just started. We need to talk about salt Lake city. Like I don’t want to talk about cancer anymore
Michele Bellisari
I haven’t watched it because I’m such a fan of the original Orange County one. It’s so crazy. I’ve heard, I’ve been watching like some of the stuff I’m like, Oh boy, here we go.
So now we’re coming into the holiday season. One of the things that I guess would be, I think a good thing to emphasize is the gift of self care for yourself. Get your mammograms, get your sonograms, get your checkups, go to your GYN, have your annuals, like have this stuff done, ladies and gents because you can’t push this off all the time and not make time for it. So that’s obviously your health is something you want to focus on.
What kind of gifts would you recommend beyond the list every internet site suggests. And I’m like, Oh my God, I love this girl. She’s so funny and you’re right. It’s like the same thing over and over. So I’d love to hear what you, I can only imagine what Kym has to say!
Kym Foust
So we get lots and lots of blankets, water bottles, socks, and coloring books. Those are the ones that must show up in the web searches constantly. I probably have 30 coloring books and those are great. I use them all, all of those came in really handy.
You need blankets because the chemo rooms are freezing cold. They keep them cold. You need non-slip socks because they’re good for hospital floors and you don’t want to wear theirs cause they’re weird and gross. Water bottles are great, but try to avoid the metal ones because they make the water taste awful because chemo frequently just completely jacks up your taste buds and it makes the water taste like poison. The number one thing that you can do for a cancer family for gifts is gift certificates for restaurant delivery. They were an absolute lifesaver. I can’t even tell you they were the new meal train.
My brother-in-law actually set up a little virtual meal train because we don’t have any family in Florida and the Grub Hub and the Postmate gift cards came in and I was like, Oh, I’ll be able to cook. It’s fine. These things were a godsend. It was such an incredible help because we had such a huge variety to choose from. If I was having a day where it was just soup and Gatorade and like pills, I knew I didn’t have to worry about feeding the rest of the family. My kid was going to be okay, like everyone was going to eat, everyone’s going to be happy out there enjoying their Chinese.
And it was a nice distraction from having to worry about all the daily stuff. They could just get some burgers delivered or a deli tray delivered and it was an absolute Godsend. And we had enough that kept us going through six hard sessions of chemo and we had enough gift cards to go all the way through. So if you know, somebody that’s recently diagnosed, set up an online meal, train for them on one of the websites and just share it and let people send virtual gift cards to them.
Michele Bellisari
Okay. I love that idea and I love that regardless, but I think that’s the way to go right now anyways, because nobody wants contact because we’re in the middle of a pandemic, which is another thing that we actually didn’t really talk about. But that’s a big concern right now. I mean, if it’s because your immune system is already compromised and then it’s like we know cancer affects the entire family. My parents had lung cancer. So we went through that with them, but we were adult children. So when you have younger kids and family members who are now living at home, that might not have been now, it becomes who are they around?
Kym Foust
Right. And a hundred percent.
Yes. My surgery I did at the tail end of my hard chemo was right when COVID was beginning. And my surgery was scheduled for March 31st and it was canceled three times because that’s when they were canceling everything in the hospitals and my surgeon, she went to bat and she was like, she has to get in, like, we have to just get this done, we cannot put this off. And I was in surgery.
I was the only one in the surgical unit that day. And as soon as I woke up, they put my socks on, handed me juice, and put me in the car by myself. But I mean, the way they handled it was just beautiful. I never felt alone. There was always a nurse there. They were holding my hand. Even when I woke up, I had my mask on. It was terrifying, but they handled it so well.
Michele Bellisari
That’s is actually so good to know because even now, there’s going to be circumstances where you’re going in alone. And as of this recording, we know that cases are going up again. So that does affect when surgeries are happening and how they’re happening and who has priority. Great that your surgeon went to bat for you and saying, let’s get this done. Especially since this was your last surgery.
Kym Foust
Yout have to do radiation by yourself. But they, even the way that they handled radiation, you stay in your car, they call you and you are the only patient in the entire unit. You’re in there for eight minutes. And then you walk out an opposite door. Everything was so smooth. It was great.
Michele Bellisari
I’ve always been a fan of West Boca Medical Center. I don’t know if you knew this, but my oldest daughter is 30, was born at the WBMC at the birthing pavilion there when they first opened. We like the hospital and the surgeons there. For knees and shoulders and stupid crap that happens, we tend to be out there, believe it or not. Kylie was born there, so I’ve always really liked it and my mother went through chemotherapy out there. So we’ve, we’ve always thought it was just an amazing facility and we’re lucky that we have it here in Boca.
Kym, are there any last things you want to share with my audience today? This is going to be on social media, SoooBoca Instagram, Facebook, YouTube along with iTunes and podcast platforms. I share it out everywhere. Anything else you can share as your tips have been fabulous.
Kym Foust
This one might not be so practical, but lets maybe touch on the cancer ghosting, which people know is a thing. It definitely happened. And it was a shock. And for people that don’t know cancer ghosting is when you basically lose your friends. When you get diagnosed, it’s the same as ghosting that happens with dating except you have cancer and they get you. And I remember reading once that it happens to 65% of us, but according to what I hear in my support group, it’s way more.
I assume it was just, it’s seeing me change so quickly and drastically was probably really like an in your face reminder of their own mortality as wives and moms. And that’s hard, I get it. But if you can’t handle seeing them, and obviously you’re not seeing them much right now, shoot them a text once in a while, something you don’t always have to talk about the cancer. Cause we’re still us inside.
We’re still your friend and relative. The ghosting is so painful that you just, I understand that it comes from a place that isn’t malicious, but it’s just kind of like the icing on the terrible cake of here’s the diagnosis, where are my friends? But on the flip side, it showed me who had my back through thick and thin. And there were friends that I haven’t talked to in years that still check in on me weekly. And I have a friend that sends me a little XOXO text on the days when she knows that I’m going to feel like garbage after treatment. That’s all it takes. She’s not expecting anything back. She’s letting me know she’s there. And if it’s hard for you, just do stuff like that, send them a meme, send them a cute picture, send them a joke, just let them know that you’re around.
Michele Bellisari
Yeah. I agree with you. And it is super easy today with social media and texting so no excuses people! Just send a Facebook message. You can do snail mail if you don’t even want to have a back and forth. They’re very funny cards by the way.
Kym Foust
Snail mail is my favorite! I have a drawer full of cards and I’ve saved all of them. They’re hilarious. I love it. I love getting snail mail and people just like asked for my address randomly and I’ll give it to them. Then I’ll get a cute little postcard with an, a little obscene joke. I love it.
Michele Bellisari
Yeah. There you go. I made a sock puppet for a friend. And I remember sending it through the mail cause it wasn’t big and she loved it.
Oh, one other thing I was going to ask you since we are like, in this season, is there, would it be helpful if, you know, let’s say under normal circumstances because the gatherings right now are going to be vastly different, but under normal circumstances, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, lots of different things going on…How do you feel about telling a hostess you have some food preferences due to your lack of taste or that foods taste funny?
Kym Foust
I think it’s even in circumstances with allergies or something would fall in the same category where I think it’s completely reasonable to say, hey, I’m kind of high maintenance on the taste buds and the appetite, is it okay if I bring XYZ so that you don’t have to go to the trouble of doing anything special for me. Nine times out of 10, they’re going to say, oh, I’ll make you this. I think it’s perfectly reasonable because otherwise you’re sitting there, and everybody’s questioning why you’re not eating and
Michele Bellisari
Lastly, I’m just going to ask you, you mentioned a few times that you have an amazing support group. Is this something that West Boca Medical Center helped you coordinate?
Kym Foust
No, actually it’s on Facebook. There is a support group that was run through my team, but they’re not meeting through the COVID stuff but some of them are actually in the Facebook group. My team set me up with a mentor who had the exact same type of diagnosis I did. So before chemo started and before surgery, I was able to kind of hit her up and say, what do I expect? And she gave me like the nitty gritty of okay, here’s how this is going to feel. And here’s how I handle it. And they, I didn’t even ask for that. They matched me up based on our personalities. It was great. So she’s a mom and she’s local and she has some of the same hobbies I do and we’re both really politically active. And so that was an amazing help in the beginning.
Michele Bellisari
That’s really cool. And since we’re in South Florida, lets talk about the heat. I am menopausal so the heat can be a bit of a problem sometimes. I keep my house freezing. I would imagine that when you’re going through treatment and then post-treatment the heat bother you. Are there certain things you love to do but it’s just too much to be outside?
Kym Foust
It’s been a weird rollercoaster because I have what’s called triple positive breast cancer, which means that it’s receptive to three different types of hormones and they needed to put me in like a rapid onset chemical on menopause. So that came right away and basically menopause squished into a couple months. So those hot flashes were something. And luckily that happened last winter, when at least we got a little bit of a cold snap, but yet it was the night sweats and they were crazy. It was, it was nutty.
But then when you start radiation, everything flips and it was actually nice. I could go for a walk in the summer and it was, I wasn’t even sweaty and I can’t stand the heat. And now it’s flipping back again cause I’m done with radiation. So you have no internal temperature regulator whatsoever. The key is just layers, go to bed and layers, have a layer at the bottom of the bed, have a cardigan on the couch, wear a tank top. If you just go with layers and I’m originally from Ohio. So I’m into the layers. This is ingrained in me so I constantly just have easily added and removable layers.
Michele Bellisari
So we’re big Buckeye fans. Both my brother-in-laws played for Ohio state. We love Columbus and Ohio. And it’s funny though, because we were up in Ohio about a year ago, speaking of hot flashes and you know, sometimes that’s a whole other conversation to have with a partner, spouse or significant other as to why you want the AC at 70 degrees. And I finally got so ticked off. I sent an email to my husband and I said, this is no joke. Like this is serious. And you gotta like keep the window open with that cool breeze. So, you know, it was beautiful, cool, weather! Like, grab a blanket. It’s these conversations that you have to have regardless.
Kym Foust
Now that we’re all home in the same house too. So what we did was we had to shut the vents off, like the home office so that I could crank the air, but his feels like the beach. So we just, we adjust exactly. We have separate blankets on the bed now.
Michele Bellisari
With that being said, I enjoyed this conversation today and I appreciate the fact that you have been so open and sharing with your journey and look at the end of the day, you know, self care, self checking, getting these mammograms and ultrasounds are so, so important to all of us. And don’t put it off, especially like this is dropping towards the end of the year, go in, make your appointments now.
Kym Foust
Right. A hundred percent. Like I said, I had an all clear exam in January of 2019. In August. I was Stage 2. Like really aggressive.
Michele Bellisari
If anybody would want to reach out to you how would they be able to do that?
Kym Foust
I could give you my email. I’d be happy to field some emails. It’s KymdotFaustatgmaildotcom
Michele Bellisari
Awesome!
Kym Faust
And I never tired of talking so I can answer any question
Wrap Up
This was fantastic. And I so appreciate that you joined us today and that you again were very open and sharing, and I think these are absolutely things that are going to help everyone who’s in that journey with a patient. So thank you.

If you are ready for a new look or just a fresh cut and shave Boca Raton barber shops and Delray Beach too…have it all going on!
Full-service barber shops are the hottest trend for men in South Florida. Everyone loves a little pampering now and then and the choices are endless!

If you are visiting or living here, Boca Raton barber shops offer a variety of services as does Delray Beach. where you can book an appointment for a little “self care” grooming time.
Here are some tips to finding the right barber for you:
Get a referral from a friend
Visit a few shops
Go to someone who takes the time to get to know your hair
Check out social media profiles
Do your research!
Take a gander at the grooming sections at the Mr. Porter and GQ websites for advice and information on finding a great barber, trust me it is truly fascinating and worth taking the time read.
Here is just a small selection of great Boca Raton barber shops in our area and ones that some of our friends have shared with us. If you have one you love don’t forget to let us know so we can add them to the list!

Along with pumpkin spice lattes, the month of October is often highlighted by a sea of pink – the official color of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM).
This October marks the 35th year since the American Cancer Society marked October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What began as a week long event in 1985 has grown to a month long global campaign.
Today, medical groups, non profit organizations, government agencies and the general public all work together during October to raise money and increase awareness.
Did You Know
We are fortunate to have West Boca Medical Center located here in Boca Raton on 441/State Road 7, just north of Palmetto Park Road and South of Glades Road.
Among many of its services, it is also home to a top notch diagnostic breast imaging center. In fact, The Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging has been named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence from the American College of Radiology.
Since it was time for my annual mammogram too, I had my screening at The Breast Center located in the Garden Shops at 7070 W Palmetto Park Rd #7036, Boca Raton, FL 33433, the Southwest corner of Palmetto and Powerline.
Due to a history of breast cancer on my mother’s side of the family and in particular my gramma, who passed away from breast cancer in the late 1970’s, I started to get mammograms around the age of 30 so that I had a baseline to refer back to.
From beginning to end, my entire appointment lasted about one hour. The parking is super easy and the location is very convenient to all of Boca and surrounding cities. The staff and medical professionals were pleasant, informative, gentle and kind. And PS… I did get a very nice pink facemask too!
The Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging
The Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging focuses on comprehensive breast care including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast conditions.
Because early diagnosis and accurate imaging is a critical aspect in breast health, this center is incredibly valuable. Among its offering are:
The Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging focuses on comprehensive breast care including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast conditions.
Beginning at age 40, women should get a screening mammogram performed annually
The Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging offers 3D Mammography.
3D mammography is designed to find cancers missed with conventional 2D (or flat image) mammography
All mammogram studies are interpreted by a breast fellowship-trained and board-certified radiologist who specializes in breast imaging.
The multidisciplinary team includes a patient navigator, medical oncologists, a pathologist, plastic surgeon, radiation oncologist, fellowship-trained radiologists, and breast surgeons.
The Breast Center also offers three different types of breast core needle biopsies, MRI-guided, ultrasound-guided and stereotactic guided. They also perform seed localizations.
Other services include: access to clinical trials, genetic counseling and high risk assessments, personalized follow up programs and surgical consultations.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, “one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime”. Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women.
Over the years, early identification has improved and new treatments have been discovered, offering hope to the many women who are diagnosed each year.
We all know someone affected by breast cancer. October offers us the opportunity to learn and help effect change on their behalf.
South Florida Supports Breast Cancer Awareness
At #SoooBoca we have actively participated in local Breast Cancer Awareness events and initiatives for years.
This year things are a bit different; many events have been redesigned to comply with Covid-19 safety precautions.
That said, there is still plenty to do during the month of October as well as throughout the year. Consider participating in some of these opportunities and events around Boca Raton:
Something cool I want to share too, is that during their time at college both of my daughters were involved in raising funds and awareness for finding a cure for breast cancer through their sorority Zeta Tau Alpha.
And, perhaps most importantly, reach out those you know who have suffered from breast cancer in the past or are currently fighting this disease.
Ask how you can help honor their success or help them through their treatment. A small act of kindness goes a long way.
Of course, these are only a few of the great things happening locally. Please, let #SoooBoca know about other awesome ways to participate this month as well as throughout the year!

In this blog post I touch on what happens when you may be going through divorce and selling your home. As an adult child of divorce, I watched my mom and dad fight over our family home here in Boca Raton back when I was still in high school.
I am not an attorney, but as a Realtor, I have worked with couples that are going through divorce that need to sell the marital property. It is never easy and making a move after living in a home for many years can be very difficult. I can certainly share a list of divorce professionals with you.
For most of us, our home is our largest single asset and typically the one of the biggest pieces of the divorce negotiation. However when you are going through divorce and considering selling your property there are a few things that you can do and to be aware of before you put the home up for sale.
There are a number of reasons the property may need to be sold, from financial to emotional, but regardless, in order to get the highest and best price for your property you need to consider a few things and I share some of those with you today.
Attorney Interview – Divorce and Selling Your Home
This interview touches on a few things that may be insightful to you including “grey divorce” situations that are happening more an more.
According to Forbes, “Grey divorce refers to a demographic trend that has witnessed an increase in the split or separation of older couples who have been married for a long time.“
Preparing Your Home For Sale
There are three things you can do to get started if you are going through a divorce and selling your home. You can break this down into small steps as to not get overwhelmed.
Determine Your Home’s Market Value
Market value is the first thing you will want to do. You can hire an Realtor to give you are comparative market analysis based on the sold properties in your neighborhood or building. You can also hire an appraiser to give you a market report.
Things that can affect the value of your home include number of rooms, condition of the property, location, square footage, improvements and overall appearance (which includes clutter, design and style).
To Sell Your House Fast, Take Time to Prepare it Properly
I podcast, write and in the above video record about why properties do not sell! I scream it from the roof tops and here we are again and I am sharing the things you can do to make sure you don’t fall into the ” WHY YOUR HOME DIDN’T SELL” category.
Prepping Your Home
A few reasons include deferred maintenance, clutter, personal items, crappy and old furniture, pet smells, cigarette smoke, dirty everything,
Take a few days to declutter your home. A fresh coat of paint can do wonders. For the love of Pete get rid of crap under your sinks, in your cabinets and out in the open. Make your bed. Better yet…get nice white comforters to help neutralize your bedroom if you have a ton of color going on.
Don’t forget your front and back yard. Curb appeal, first impressions and outdoor lifestyle come into play big time. During the winter month consider having solar light discs to light up your gardens or yard. You can find them on Amazon and they are affordable and amazing.
Putting Your House Up For Sale
You can certainly attempt at selling the house yourself but hiring a well qualified Realtor who also happens to be a marketer is your best bet. Your Realtor can coordinate a number of moving pieces for you when you are going through a divorce and selling your home.
From the coordination of the sale including “virtual” open houses these days, helping you find a contractor or handyman to get the property ready, help you find a mover and your new home whether a rental or a purchase a great Realtor can help you out in a variety of ways.

Since we as a family have been in stay home, stay safe mode for a couple of months, we have been trying to entertain ourselves, stay focused, as well as working on staying positive.
Some super cool friends of mine came up with the idea of doing a bright side challenge to share some of the positive things that we all have been doing or observed since the Covid-19 quarantine began.
I hope you enjoy this post and don’t forget to scroll to the bottom to see what my other midlife bloggers pals have written as I know you will get some great tips and ideas from them!
Thank you to all of the health care workers, front line helpers and first responders.
With that being said it has not been as difficult for me as for some as I am used to working from home as a Realtor with RE/MAX and have a home office plus my children are young adults. I am used to doing Zoom meetings and the “pause” gave me time to finish projects, update relocation guides and have more time to do my real estate podcasts and my local one #SoooBoca Stories!
I have tried to look at the “bright side” of this quarantine and made a list of things that I have learned and what my takeaways have been.
Happy Hour
I am a cup half full person in general so trying to figure out the bright side of this quarantine was a bit of a challenge at first but once I got back to that mindset the ideas started to flow.
First and foremost cocktail hour has returned a couple of days a week now with my housemate (and youngest daughter) Halle who is a fashion and photography maven.
Her talent has crossed over to creating craft cocktails along with creating charcuterie boards with a variety of interesting items from cheeses and meats from local stores along with nuts, olives, crackers and interesting surprises! Here salami river is delightfully placed just an FYI.
Comfort Food
My husband Captain Andy is a great cook and grill master from his famous smoked fish dip to seared tuna and amazing soups. Thankfully he and Alle are creating some delicious meals.
Last week a friend of ours had some king fish that he had popped on his smoker and kindly shared with us by leaving it on our front porch.
I do cook a little bit but they seem to be much better at it and enjoy it more than I do LOL!
In between their meals I have been ordering takeout as I love my favorite local restaurants and am trying to support as many as I can as they pivot to stay afloat.
Surprise Porch Packages
Another bright side to all of this is that Amazon isn’t the only one making deliveries during this time.
A spectacular wine surprise showed up on my porch. I thought it was an early birthday gift for moi but it was a thank you from some favorite clients of mine. If you have ever had wine from South Africa you know it is simply delightful!
Another friend dropped off a beautiful orchid with stunning purple blooms to help me celebrate my birthday!
Birthdays
Speaking of birthdays…my birthday week started on April 18th and Halle experimented with margaritas and created two that were simply smashing.
A Kiwi concoction for the first round and a refreshing mandarin orange one for our second round. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed these libations and had forgotten how much I truly love tequila.
This particular drink I was called a “Conchtail” since I added a little sea shell on top of the floating lime! Hey it’s all about creativity right!
#SupportLocalBoca
As I said we have been doing our best to support local restaurants around town from Tomassos to Kapow to Marios to The Rebel House and of course Flanagans in East Boca (we love their wings). Check out the article we wrote about the Socially Distanced Supper Club initiative!
We have had a few birthdays in the mix during Covid-19, my first born child, Kylie, is April 10th, the Captain is March 23rd and I am April 18th.
For Kylie’s birthday we did a Zoom dinner and Andy secretly helped her boyfriend Nick set it up and showed him how to make an amazing ribeye on their new grill!
A very bright side to my birthday was that Kylie and her man sent a delicious treat from Palour Vegan Bakery to me to help kick off my birthday week!
Support Local Elsewhere
By the way, since Kylie lives in Pittsburgh, we wanted to support local there and ordered coffee and donuts for her birthday from Donut Connect to be delivered to her home the day before her actual birthday! They did not disappoint and were delightful to order from.
Social Media Sharing
One thing I have been doing via our Instagram and Facebook accounts is sharing businesses that are open. From restaurants doing curbside pick up to services that are still available. Currently many of the Palm Beach county restaurants are open, with restrictions via the Governor, but table service is once again available.
You can check out the #supportlocalboca highlight on Instagram to see a variety of local options for you to choose from and support.
Non Profits
Restaurateur and owner of South Florida’s Subculture Group, Rodney Mayo, has founded Hospitality Helping Hands (H3), a community meal distribution nonprofit organization equipped to provide up to 3,000 warm meals daily in each location established within the West Palm Beach area.
We also drove out to Thomas Produce and picked up amazing boxes of veggies for $10.00 per box. One of which was donated to Boca Helping Hands.
Please consider making a donation to assist these wonderful initiatives.
Beautiful Distractions
We took a drive after we heard about the Boca Resort and their special lighting message to all of us. That pink tower has followed me around town since 1978 and I can see it from my house. The “LUV” text in the windows of the tower brought a little brightness to our evening and frankly it was a super cool thing for them to do!
Exploring The Neighborhood
We happen to live in East Boca and have some pretty old school communities that are nice to bike through.
From the foliage to birds and animals, we have seen some super cool wildlife enjoying the fabulous weather we have had here in Boca Raton this spring. Taking these bike rides has been a true blessing and part of our daily routine.
Taking the time to cruise around has really reminded us of what we appreciate about where we live.
Last Thoughts
During this weird and scary time I have had time to reassess a few things in regard to my business, personal relationships and what is next.
Travel: I realize how much I truly love to travel, especially with my family, and that incorporating more of that into my life (daycations, staycations and LOcations) included, will now be front and center on my agenda.
Business Travel and Conventions: I don’t see myself spending money on attending many conventions moving forward. Inflated ticket prices already had me rethinking that there was a better and more affordable way to get fresh and timely information as well as network with my peers. Oh ya…right…Zoom and online events have arrived. YAY!
Homefront: How much I appreciate having a work from home space that is pleasant and peaceful. That I knew I was always a homebody of sorts but that now I have really embraced my introverted self.
Pets: I have always known that my animals give me great comfort but especially during this time, Brody, my yellow lab has been an absolute delight and has tolerated crying occasionally from me and being filmed for TikTok!
Self Care: Learning to just take the day off. Literally. No social media, no work interaction. Giving myself permission to just be.
